TOROMAIMA

TOROMAIMA "Santiago de León de Caracas" Beyond the Modernist Grid Urban Portraits and Street Photography
While the geometric rigor of mid-century modernism defines the monumental facade of Caracas, a vibrant, everyday reality pulses just behind the concrete. This photographic series steps away from the strict structural examination of architecture to objectively document the “popular” Caracas—the human scale and the living city that inhabits the spaces between these modernist utopias. To truly see this city and the people who navigate its layered infrastructure, one must first understand the roots of its origin.
The etymology of the valley is a perfect synthesis of its tropical nature and colonial history. The name of a local bird is “Toro,” and its distinct song sounds like “Mayma”—giving rise to the “Toromaima” tribe, who historically settled along the banks of the Guaire River. The word “caraca” is the indigenous noun for the pira (amaranth) flower, which blooms abundantly throughout the valley. The addition of “León” is attributed to the Spanish founder, Don Diego de Losada, who established the city on the feast day of San León. Together, these elements forge the city’s full name: Santiago de León de Caracas.
This duality—between the ancient, natural valley and the relentless urban expansion of blocks and hills—is deeply ingrained in the local identity, capturing the resilience of the Caribbean heart as echoed in its traditional music:
Caracas, caracas,
Yo te canto noche y día
Para que mejores tiempos
Te perfumen de alegría (Bis)
I
Estirpe de viejos tiempos
Nacida de Taraimana
Que defendieron al cetro
Con guaruras y macanas
II
Cuando piratas guerreros
Mancillaron la alborada
Ledezma valiente y solo
Entrego su sangre en llamas
III
De vida, color y gloria
Fue el cantar de los poetas
Sultana de techos rojos
De tranvías y retretas
IV
Se desvanecen los cielos
Con bocinas y taladros
Pero el corazón caribe
Renacerá con los años
V
Caminante de veredas
De bloques y de colinas
Hoy llevas el tiempo nuevo
En cada paso que anidas
VI
Desnuda tu pecho y canta
El amor por tu ciudad
Y un manantial de sonrisa
De futuro nacerá
