SEM Headquarters: Institutional Infrastructure in L'Hospitalet Architecture by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos
Located within the developing Biopol of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, the new Medical Emergencies System (SEM) headquarters by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos stands as a critical node of public health infrastructure. Designed to meet highly demanding operational requirements, the building is defined by its pragmatic volumetric presence, efficient internal flows, and robust contemporary facade. Documenting this complex civic facility demands a rigorous visual approach to capture both its institutional scale and its functional clarity.
The visual narrative of this project is constructed through a strict two-scale structural philosophy. At the macro level, the framing prioritizes clear, two-dimensional perspective lines to objectively register the building’s monumental insertion into the urban fabric and the geometric rhythm of its exterior envelope. At the micro scale, the lens isolates the precise tectonic details, material finishes, and the spatial intelligence that dictates the facility’s internal operations.
Because this is a highly active and operational environment, quick-capture camera techniques were essential to freeze the interaction of natural light with the architectural volumes without disrupting the site’s ongoing rhythm. Eschewing passive or romanticized imagery, this photographic series delivers a strictly objective, geometric examination of b720’s design, translating a highly functional public building into a pure architectural language.
